According to the March of Dimes, research suggests that folic acid (a B vitamin) may help protect you from heart disease, cervical and colon cancer, and possibly breast cancer. If you take folic acid before and during early pregnancy, it may help reduce your baby’s risk for birth defects of the heart, limbs, and face.
The WIC Program, along with family planning and child health, distributes free vitamins with folic acid to all women of child-bearing age. You do not have to be enrolled in any of the health department programs to receive the free vitamins.
